A blue sky ceiling brings me joy!
Who says that ceilings have to be white?
Sometimes called the fifth wall, colour on the ceiling adds drama and excitement to a room. Yes, paint can add magic to your living space!
I am partial to blue ceilings.
A blue sky with a beaming sun is cheerful and hopeful and provides the promise of warmth and renewal even on the coldest day, especially here in the Maritimes where we experience some pretty brutal winters.
It only makes sense that re-creating a lovely blue sky on your ceiling creates a fresh, inviting environment. According to colour psychology, blue is considered beneficial to the mind and body and symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven.
Here is the freshly painted ceiling of my dining room. The pop of colour on the ceiling is unexpected and adds charm and whimsy to this historical home’s grand ceilings. Read on and I will share the perfect paint colour for your blue ceiling.
The talented Kristie Barnett of the fabulous blog, The Decorologist has been adding colour to her clients’ ceilings with great success for years now.
Kristie points out that:
In a relatively small room, when the walls are painted light or neutral, a dark painted ceiling actually recedes. Think of it like a night sky that goes on and on.
She transformed this formerly bland bedroom with a coat of blue-green paint on the ceiling.

Even though I love the white planked walls and chunky crown moulding of this room, I think this space would look quite dull without the stunning blue ceiling.
This coastal living room would be lovely without the blue ceiling but the blue creates a stunning space!
Notice how the blue ceiling transforms this very ordinary (despite the great accents on the walls) bathroom.
My fellow True Colour Expert and superb designer Hannah Dee of Hannah Dee Interiors added drama and emphasis to this dining room with the blue ceiling. I love how the warm gold and bronze tones of this beautiful and dramatic light fixture are enhanced by the deep blue of the ceiling.
My favourite blue paint for a ceiling is Woodlawn Blue by Benjamin Moore.
Woodlawn Blue is the perfect mixture of blue and green and will change according to light conditions and time of day. I used Woodlawn Blue in the dining room above and in an adjoining room. Notice how the blue appears a little bit darker in this room?
I can’t imagine getting tired of my blue ceilings for a long long time. They make me smile.
Ok I admit it, I sit and stare at my blue sky ceilings and feel peaceful and calm and tranquil, all the qualities that blue is supposed to evoke.
